Security Needs of Commercial Office Buildings

A commercial office building is a busy place. Tenant employees and guests come and go throughout the day. Packages are sent and received.

Tenants expect that a proper level of security is part of their leasing agreement—and rightly so.

Security for office buildings vary by tenant type, building layout and budget. As a commercial office-building owner, it’s your responsibility to ensure that tenants operate in a safe and secure environment. Here are several security considerations.

–The security needs of any potential tenant must be compatible with those of existing tenants. A new tenant with high security demands may put other tenants at risk and will require an increase in overall building security.

–Lobby guards should be more than “meet and greet” staffers. They must be licensed guards able to make a quick security evaluation of building guests while demonstrating strong people skills.

–Consider issuing scannable entry cards for tenant employees and a check-in system for all guests and delivery personnel.

–Develop emergency response procedures with your guards. Conduct annual building-wide emergency drills and tenant safety education programs.

–Install security cameras with monitors located at a centralized security post.

Finding the right level of protection not only keeps tenants safe, but in the current environment, strong safety protocol is an important feature to offer would-be tenants.
