Convenience Store Security and Protection
According to FBI statistics, robberies at gas stations and convenience stores accounted for almost 10 percent of all robberies (9.5 percent) in 2017. While bank robberies get the headlines, they were just 1.7 percent of the total number. For gas station and convenience store owners, implementing a number of security measures can discourage would-be robbers.
Increase Interior Visibility. Configure merchandise racks so employees can see the entire store. Consider placing mirrors in locations where visibility is minimal. Avoid placing merchandise against storefront windows. You want to make sure the interior of the store is visible to police and security guard patrols from the outside. Mount security cameras throughout the store including at the checkout counter.
Exterior Protection. Add extra lighting whenever possible. Add security cameras to the exterior including at the store entrance, gas islands and parking areas. Camera feeds should be viewed in the store on monitors.
Control Cash. Restrict the amount of cash on hand. Place excess cash in a drop safe or make multiple daily trips to the bank to make deposits. Most robbers want to grab what’s in the register and make a fast exit. If there is very little in the drawer, they’ll soon scratch off the store from their list of easy targets.
On-Site Convenience Store Security Guards. Convenience stores are often open around the clock. Robbers are most tempted to steal during late evening or early morning hours when there are fewer customers. Consider stationing a security guard during those times out front to discourage criminals. The best security guards for convenience store protection are experienced in retail security.
Train Staff. Train your staff on how to react if a robbery occurs. The goal is that no one gets hurt. If a robbery occurs, hopefully, there will be enough evidence for police to apprehend the perpetrators.
