Personal Security In The Age of Stalkers
You don’t have to be a celebrity to become the victim of a stalker. Stalkers can be ex-boyfriends, disgruntled co-workers or someone who has become obsessed with you for no apparent reason. If somebody threatens your or makes you feel unsafe, contact the police at once. Even if a restraining order is in place, however, it may not be enough.
The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office prepared a list of safety tips to follow when personal safety is at risk. Here are some of suggestions.
Home Security
–Install a security doorbell or surveillance camera so you know who is at the door before opening.
–Prepare an evacuation plan if an intruder enters. Provide ladders or rope for two-story residences.
–Install dead bolts on all outside doors.
–Consider adopting a family dog–one of the most effective alarm systems.
Work Security
–Park in a secured area if possible.
–Have your name removed from any reserved parking area.
–Alert work security guard staff of your situation. Provide staff with the stalker’s information including photo.
–Be alert to anyone possibly following you from work to your car. Have a work security guard escort you to your vehicle.
Personal Security
–Remove your home address on personal checks and business cards.
–File a change of address card with the Post Office giving a P.O. Box as your new address.
–When traveling by vehicle, plan ahead. Know the locations of police stations, fire departments, and busy shopping centers.
These measures will only go so far in keeping a stalker away. Personal bodyguards or personal security guards are often an option if the threat is severe. A personal security detail can provide services while you are in public—while shopping, traveling, going to events, eating out and provide overnight home perimeter security.
Personal security companies provide guards who are always scanning your surroundings for someone intent on approaching you. Their physical presence sends a message to the stalker that you’ve hired protection. This alone can act as a deterrent. If the stalker approaches you, the guard can step in, thwart a confrontation and detain the stalker until police arrive.
Until the stalker is arrested and in jail or the threats cease, a bodyguard offers a high level of personal security.
