Not All Shoplifting is “Smash and Grab” – Security Guards Can Prevent Smaller-Scale Theft

Much has been reported about the “smash and grab” theft epidemic plaguing the country, but more common shoplifting is still a major problem. A prolific shoplifter has hit Southern California Target stores at least 25 times. Most of these one or two-person jobs can be prevented with a strong store security guard presence.

Manageable Numbers. Individuals in retail crime ring thefts tend to be more violent with some being armed. Individual shoplifters would rather try to run than fight after being caught. This gives security guards an opportunity to subdue the thief and detain the individual until police arrive.

Prevention is Key. Expensive or desirable items should be in a locked area or produced only upon request. Sight lines from aisle to aisle should not be obstructed. Security guards must be stationed at the front of the store, and if the security budget allows, a second guard should walk the store looking for suspicious activity.

Small-scale shoplifting will never be completely eliminated, but with a security guard on site and prevention practices in place, these individuals will not attempt to steal, or if they do, there is a great likelihood they will be spotted and detained.
