A Security Officer’s Duties
Here are some of security guard activities allowed by law.
Detain Offenders. Many people wonder whether a security guard can make an arrest. Security guards are not police officers—and only police offers can make arrests. However, it is lawful for a security guard to restrain an individual until police arrive (known as a “citizen’s arrest”).
Security guards can only detain someone if they have witnessed the crime or the attempted crime taking place or have reasonable suspicion that the individual was involved in a crime. They can only search an individual if they believe the individual is carrying a weapon.
Enforce Rules. Security guards are allowed to enforce codes of conduct at events, within gated communities, apartment complexes, schools and shopping centers.
Control Access. Security guards, under the direction and permission of the private company, business or individual who hires them, can enforce access rules dictating who can enter parking lots, office buildings and other public and private locations.
Use of Force. Security guards are allowed to use force only when necessary and as a last resort. Much depends on the circumstances. Most disturbances can be resolved with verbal communication.
Prevention and Protection. The primary role of security guards is to protect property and people—whether by preventing bad things from happening or protecting those in danger if a serious incident occurs.
