California and Texas With Highest Cargo Theft
CargoNet reports that there were more than 200 cargo thefts per month in the US in 2023, a 57 percent rise from the year before. Between December 2023 and January 2, 2024, during the height of the holiday season, 205 thefts took place, says CargoNet, which tracks cargo thefts. California and Texas each had 37. The company found that thefts occurred at truck stops, parking lots and warehouse distribution centers. Adding security guards at distribution centers and around major truck stops can be one way to reduce these numbers.
What’s Being Targeted? Household goods, food and beverages and electronics are hot items—those that can be easily sold online or on the black market.
Distribution centers are constantly creating new safeguards and installing sophisticated tracking systems to help curb cargo theft, yet the problem keeps getting worse. Employing security guards adds another layer of protection that can’t be attained with technology alone. Large truck stops are employing guards with greater frequency. Management at both types of sites knows that guards can spot and react to suspicious situations much faster than relying only on technology.
