McDonald’s Requires Face Masks; How Will Rule Be Enforced?

Late last month, McDonald’s announced that it is requiring customers to wear face masks when entering its 14,000 U.S. restaurants. It follows other major chains such as Starbucks and Panera Bread. State mandatory face mask wearing rules are already in effect for restaurants throughout California and in counties in Arizona. Los Angeles County has the toughest face mask requirements. Enforcing these rules is often the job of security guards.

For those who enter a McDonald’s without wearing a mask, McDonald’s says a mask is offered. If the customer refuses the mask, the customer is directed to a location away from other customers to pick up their items.

Security Guards On The Front Line. Despite McDonald’s safety efforts, once a mask-less customer enters a restaurant and interacts with employees and possibly other customers, the risk of transmission increases. That’s why many restaurants are stationing security guards at restaurant entrances. Individuals attempting to enter without a mask are asked to put one on. If they still refuse, they are denied entry and given instructions on how to order food-to-go or arrange for delivery.

Restaurant security guards are trained to keep conversations positive and polite, yet firm. With so many restaurants hurting financially, they want to avoid situations that will drive customers away. It’s the guards’ objective to maintain restaurant safety while providing customers with options that will still result in a positive experience—mask or no mask.
