New School Year Brings Sadness, Calls For Tougher Security

The recent tragic school shooting in Georgia is a reminder that we need to stay vigilant when it comes to protecting students. Strong school security measures can help stop those who are intent on causing violence on school campuses.

School Security: Schools are adding mandatory administrative office check-ins, metal detectors and fencing to stop intruders. Increasingly, school security guards are patrolling campuses. They look for student misbehavior and unauthorized individuals on school sites.

Security cameras with 24/7 real-time monitoring are gaining popularity. When off-site security personnel spot something suspicious, they alert onsite security guards or school administration for immediate response. They also contact the police if the situation warrants it.

Will these measures ensure that no violence will ever take place at a school? No. There will always be ways for someone focused on doing harm to slip through the security cracks. Schools are physically too big, filled with hundreds of students and school personnel to make any security plan foolproof. Strong security measures can, however, stop many criminal acts and reduce the number affected if an incident occurs. While not perfect, they can save lives.
