Pet Stores Are Often Targets of Theft Rings

Most of us who go to a pet store are there to check out the cute puppies, not to steal them. Unfortunately, pet stores are targets of those who want to grab expensive animals and sell them on the black market. In one recent case, robbers stole five French and English bulldogs worth more than $44,000. In another, a woman was arrested for stealing a Havanese puppy valued at $4,050.

Pet stores need to take security measures or risk losing their precious inventory.

Security Cameras And Mirrors. Security cameras can capture criminals in the act and help identify thieves. A monitored, 24-hour security camera means that the reviewing dispatch officer can alert police or an onsite guard of a crime in progress. Adding security mirrors, with their wider fields of view, around the store will also help security staff and employees keep track of customers.

A Security Guard Presence. Security guards for pet stores are becoming more common as the value of the animals continue to rise. A French bulldog can cost about $2,000. A Bull Terrier’s average price is $1,500 while a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel runs around $1,200. Even the least expensive dogs found in a pet store can be $500 or more. Exotic birds and animals are also targets.

Pet store security guards often patrol the aisles and are stationed at entrances to prevent anyone from walking out the door with an animal.

Pet store protection and security monitoring are critical. Once an animal is stolen, its safety is in jeopardy.
