Retail Security Check List As The Holidays Near

For retailers, the holiday shopping seasons can mean the difference between a successful and unsuccessful year. A lot is riding on meeting sales goals. Shoplifting and employee theft can undercut even the most successful marketing efforts.

Here are holiday security tips for retailers.

Configure Store Layout With Security In Mind. Extra merchandise, displays, signage and holiday decorations pack stores in November and December. While creating a festive appearance, added items can make it difficult to secure the store. Employees can find it challenging to keep an eye on goods and customers.  Remove clutter at store entrances and in aisles.

Hire Retail Security Guards. Enlisting the services of a retail store security guard company during the holidays is one of the most effective ways to reduce theft. Guards are stationed at entrances, near cash registers (to deter employee theft and holdups) and throughout the store. If guards or employees observe a customer stealing, a guard will follow the customer outside the store and detain the individual until police arrive.

Add Security Cameras and Mirrors. Prominently mount security cameras. Add security mirrors that show activity in hard-to-monitor store locations. Make sure security cameras are up-to-date and working properly. Have your security team review camera feeds daily to observe customer and employee behavior.

Store Closing Procedures. Once the store is closed, canvas the entire store to ensure no customers remain. Once the store is clear, secure cash and high-priced merchandise. Double check that all entrances are locked. If part of your routine is to take cash with you for deposit at a bank, have a security guard escort you to your vehicle.
