Securing Your Home During A Remodel

A major home remodeling project can be overwhelming—with contractors coming and going, new appliances and cabinets being delivered–it’s easy to overlook security. Because the home is often left open so workers can have access, alarm systems offer little protection. If the home is uninhabitable while work is being done, security takes on added importance.

Here are tips to help reduce theft during a large home remodeling project.

Hire Reputable Contractors. Only select contractors that are licensed and bonded. Check references.

Store Valuables Offsite. Place jewelry and important papers in a safety deposit box. For larger items of value, store them with a trusted friend or relative or at a temporary storage facility.

Enlist The Help Of Your Contractor. Discuss security procedures with your contractor. Will the contractor have a key to your home? What steps does the contractor take to secure equipment and tools on the property? When possible, construction items should be locked in a room after work is finished for the day. Tools and materials should be out of view from the front of the house.

Add Motion Sensor Lighting And Security Cameras. Add extra lighting and mount security cameras around the perimeter of the home. This is especially important during major remodels when portions of the interior are exposed.

Check On The Site Daily. Visit the site at the end of each day to not only examine the progress of the job but to make sure that doors are locked and materials are secured.

Use Home Security Guards. If your family must be out of the home during remodeling, hire a home security guard service to monitor the home at intervals throughout the evening. The security guard company should also be responsible for viewing security camera feed. If suspicious behavior is spotted, the home security guards for the home remodeling job will immediately respond and, when necessary, authorities will be contacted.
