Stop Employee Theft Using Security Guards

Whether you operate a retail store, warehouse, medical supply company or another type of business where employees may be tempted to steal equipment, merchandise or cash, having a security guard presence on-site can help stop employee theft activity.

Inside-Jobs Impact Businesses. Employee theft is a $50 billion a year problem. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, there are four ways employees steal: theft of merchandise, supplies, money and data. The chamber suggests better screening of prospective employees, a no-tolerance anti-theft policy and an anonymous employee tip line to report fraud as ways to stop employees from being tempted to steal.

Two other approaches have also proven successful.

Video Surveillance. The first is instituting a monitored, video camera surveillance program. Cameras are mounted prominently throughout the business with real-time feeds viewed offsite by staff from a security company. Staff observes the feeds, looking for inappropriate behavior as well as monitoring vehicles entering and exiting the location. If they see something unusual, they alert onsite security or the business’ management. Feeds can be viewed during business hours, and when necessary, during off-hours.

Security Guards. Hiring security guards is another employee theft-prevention strategy. Guards are stationed at entrances and in areas where merchandise is delivered or loaded. They stand guard over inventory and expensive equipment. At retail outlets, guards are near cash registers and exits so they can observe employees and customers as they transact.
