As School Districts Cut Security Staffing, Crime Increases

Last year, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) was down over 130 security officers–from 374 to 240. Not surprising, there were 332 batteries, 75 aggravated assaults and 12 arsons on LAUSD campuses in 2021. Private security guards assigned to schools can help stem the number of these violent incidents.

Providing Support. Private security guards offer support and backup to full-time officers. They can strategically be placed in schools with high numbers of violent activity. Currently, LAUSD officers only come to campuses after a school calls requesting help. This strategy doesn’t prevent crime, it only addresses it after the criminal act occurs.

Private security guards on campuses send a message—if a student acts out inappropriately, there will be immediate consequences. Their presence on campus prevents violent acts from occurring and provides students with a person of authority to confide in if they feel they are in danger or hear of possible violence.

Prevention is key. On-campus fights quickly go viral and breed more violence. Security guards can prevent tempers from boiling over and keep campuses safe.
