Elected Officials At Risk, More Security Guard Protection Needed

In a survey by the Brennan Center for Justice, public officeholders across the country are experiencing an increase in threats that include harassment, abusive language and physical attacks.  As election day draws closer, additional personal security guards and safety measures are needed to protect those in the public eye.

Fearing For Their Safety. The survey found that officeholders across demographic categories experienced threats or attacks over the past three years with the amount and severity increasing. Because of this fear for their safety, the survey found that over 40 percent of local officeholders were less willing to hold higher offices and 23 percent were less likely to hold public events. The nature of the job, however, requires public exposure. Personal security guards act as a shield to prevent attackers from reaching their target. They scan public areas for suspicious individuals, monitor real-time security camera streams, and guard entrances of enclosed spaces to ensure nobody uninvited gets through or is carrying a weapon.

As the election rhetoric heats up, officeholders and candidates must take their personal security seriously. Armed or unarmed, uniformed or plain-clothed guards are an important part of the security strategy.
