Keep Holiday Deliveries Out Of The Hands Of Thieves

Most of us are addicted to shopping online—especially during the holidays. The U.S. Postal Service expects to deliver 900 million packages during the holidays this year. UPS will deliver another 800 million. Most of those packages will be deposited on people’s front doorsteps. Here are some tips to ensure those packages are safely received.

Send Packages To A Secure Location. If you will be doing most of your holiday shopping online, consider signing up for a personal mailbox at a UPS or FedEx store. Packages are delivered there and you pick them up at your convenience. Another option: some online sites with brick and mortar locations will allow you to pick up your packages at one of their nearby stores.

Have Packages Delivered To Your Work. This may not be possible for everyone but if you can, receive packages at work. To be safe, ask a security guard to walk you and your packages to your car.

Include Delivery Instructions. Include specific delivery instructions with your order. Ask the delivery company to leave packages behind a gate or in a portion of the entryway that’s not visible from the street.

Monitor Your Packages Online. Take advantage of free delivery tracking services that tell you when a package is expected to be delivered and when it arrives. UPS will take a picture of your package on your front porch. Don’t let it sit there. If you’re not home, ask a neighbor to pick it up for you. If you’re sending the package to a friend or relative, notify them that it’s coming.

Add Security Cameras And Signs. Thieves are less likely to try to steal packages from porches where there are visible security cameras, a Ring Video Doorbell or prominently placed security signs.

Work-Related Deliveries Are Vulnerable Too. Businesses receive an increased number of packages during the holidays. As part of their job, security guards should be assigned to monitor all packages coming in and going out to make sure they end up in the right hands.
