Organized Crime Leading To Record Loses At Target, More Security Guards Needed

Target projected its retail inventory losses would increase at least by $400 million this year over 2021 primarily due to organized crime rings. With holiday shopping in full swing, Target and other retailers are looking to increase security measures including hiring more security guards to keep criminals from stealing from their stores.

Things Are Getting Worse. Target representatives say that organized retail crime has gotten worse over the last 12 to 18 months. According to the National Retail Federation, retailers lost $94.5 billion in stolen goods last year, up from $90.8 billion in 2020.

What can be done to reduce individual shoplifting and organized crime ring theft?

  • Move desirable items away from store entrances.
  • Design store layouts so it’s more difficult to steal without being noticed.
  • Station security guards at all entrances and around high-ticket items. Designer clothes, accessories and cosmetics are some of the most popular items to steal. Even baby formula (currently in short supply) is on the criminals’ hot list.
  • If criminals are caught, press charges when possible.
