Retail Theft Cuts Into Profits: Added Security Guards Needed

Sluggish earning reports by Dollar Tree and Dick’s Sporting Goods say retail theft is primarily to blame. While Dollar Tree says it will lock up more merchandise or stop selling some goods entirely, theft will continue. Store security guards are needed to deter theft and keep employees and customers safe.

When Security Guards Are Most Effective. Store security guards are most effective when spotting individual shoplifters. Guards can detain single shoplifters before they leave the store. Depending on store policy, the store manager can then contact the police or take other action.

When a large mob enters a store, a guard can do little to stop the entire group. The guard’s primary responsibility is to ensure that employees and customers are not harmed during the theft. Security guards also are trained to observe criminals, their getaway vehicles and other details that might help identify the criminals which can lead to their arrest. As more arrests are made and significant prison time is handed out, the number of these types of mob take-overs will go down.
