Security Guards Having An Impact on Retail Crime

A Palo Alto, California security guard stopped a mob from entering a Louis Vuitton store at a local mall. Ten to 12 masked and hooded individuals targeted the store. The first two were stopped from entering. The guard then locked the door causing the would-be robbers to jump in their cars and leave the scene. The presence of an armed security guard and his quick action prevented the loss of possibly tens of thousands of dollars in high-end goods.

Security Guards Making A Difference. Mob-type store thefts are typically carried out by young people, not seasoned thieves. When faced with pushback from a security guard they will flee rather than face arrest. When they are met with no resistance, they know they can steal as much as they can carry without consequence. The stolen merchandise ends up in the hands of organized crime ring leaders who sell the merchandise online and on the black market.

Security guards strategically stationed at entrances can prevent criminals from entering. One successful stop by a guard can save the retailer thousands of dollars in lost goods. Security cameras can play an important role in helping to identify thieves but they are not preventative—thieves know they are on camera but that doesn’t stop them from stealing.
